First Full Day of Spring
Today, as I was driving my 4 miles of gravel and 4 miles of county pavement into work, I was reminded of why I fell in love with this place more than 5 years ago.
The warm weather has everything coming out of hibernation to enjoy the warmth of the sun! The drastic change in temperature and humidity had everything damp with condensation, even my car windows were ‘fogged’ over.
As I rounded the corner at the neighbors ranch, their draft horses were out grazing the bright green grass coming up among the burnt dead grass from last year.
Once I was settled in at my office, I made my weekly trip up the block to the court house. On the way up, there were two or three cars that passed, all waved welcomingly. In the court house, everyone was cheery for a Monday morning; I guess no one had to experience road rage on their way to work today (or any day in Wabaunsee County). And on the short walk back to the office, I stopped to say hi to Jeanette at the Alma Bakery and take in her sweet aromas! What a terrific way to start my week!
This is the modern day Mayberry. The rural communities of Kansas offer this exceptional experience every morning of everyday throughout the year.
Spring is an especially magical time in rural Kansas because the communities come alive with activity! I am looking forward to the outdoor icecream shop opening up in May, and the Friday evening live Bluegrass Jam sessions held at the corner of Third and Missouri. All of the summer festivals, activities at the Lake and Golf Course, and of course more time in the saddle, riding these beautiful Flint Hills!
Today is a great reminder of all the blessings that have come my way, and the joys of choosing to live in Rural Kansas!
